Nei nostri brani, si canta l’espressione Spiritual e Gospel.
Lo Spiritual, che risale agli inizi del 1600, ha un carattere fortemente malinconico e si formula come preghiera personale verso Dio che celebra la morte come momento di liberazione dalle sofferenze terrene e di ascesa a una vita migliore:
Steal away, steal away to Jesus… I ain’t got long to stay here
Fuggirò via, fuggirò verso Gesù… Non mi resta ancora molto tempo da vivere
Nella musica Gospel invece, nata solo all’inizio di questo secolo, il testo e le espressioni emozionali riflettono il desiderio di superare i problemi grazie alla forza d’animo che solo la fede in Dio può dare:
I wanna sing how I got over, I wanna sing just for Him… My soul looks back and wonders, how I got over.
Voglio cantare e celebrare come ho superato la sofferenza, voglio cantare solo per Lui … La mia anima si volge indietro e si chiede come abbia fatto a superare il dolore.
In questi canti non c’è quasi niente che vada secondo lo spartito: gli strumenti, batteria, tastiera, basso sostengono e trascinano il coro, e con esso tutta la comunità.
